To make sure that Google is aware of your site there are a few steps to do

It is easier to print this page out and have it next to you as you go through the stages

1. Log into your WordPress site and add the Yoast SEO plugin & activate it (leave the tab open)
2. In a new tab log into your Google account  (leave the tab open too)

Claiming your site with Google

1. Go to Google Webmasters and click Add a Property (top right in red)
2. Enter the URL of a property you’d like to manage (your website domain e.g. geekfairy.co.uk)
3. On the next window click on Alternate methods
4. The choose HTML tag
5. copy the long tag
6. leave that page open and go to another tab with your WordPress site dashboard
7. On the left in WordPress Dashboard go to SEO – General – Webmaster tools
8. Enter the long tag into Google Search Console & click Save Changes
9. Go back to the Google tab you have open
10. And click verify – it will then confirm you have the tag in.

Enter a Site map with Google

1. On the Google webmasters homepage next to your site click on the domain
2. click on arrows next to sitemap
3. click on Add/Test sitemap
4. add into the box sitemap_index.xml 
5. Click submit sitemap
